A coalition of Ocean City residents and civic groups has filed a lawsuit in Cape May County Superior Court to void a recent city council vote that designated the defunct Wonderland Pier as an area in need of rehabilitation. The designation paves the way for the site’s new owner, developer Eustace Mita, to bypass certain zoning restrictions and construct a 252-room, seven-story luxury hotel on the boardwalk. Plaintiffs argue the city’s decision was legally flawed and compromised by major conflicts of interest, pointing to Mayor Jay Gillian’s extensive financial ties to the developer, which allegedly include a two-million-dollar consulting agreement and a million-dollar personal loan.
