Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H.Sutherland and Chief Joseph Murphy of the Wildwood Police Department announce that on February 8, 2024, Gerald White was sentenced on two (2) counts of Aggravated Manslaughter, in the 1st degree, to twenty-five (25) years New Jersey state prison concurrent to each other and two (2) counts of Aggravated Assault, in the 2nd Degree, to ten (10) years New Jersey state prison, also concurrent to each other. White is subject to the No Early Release Act on all counts, which means he must serve 85% of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.
On September 24, 2022, at approximately 9:36 PM, patrol officers from the Wildwood Police Department were called to the area of Burk and Atlantic Avenues for the report of a
multi-vehicle crash involving pedestrians. Upon arrival, it was learned that White, who was driving a 2003 Infinity, attempted to flee the scene but was quickly apprehended.
Members of the Wildwood Police Department and Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Crash Unit responded to the scene to conduct the investigation. The investigation
determined White first struck a 2014 Honda Civic and then two pedestrians. Sadly, one of the pedestrians, Lindsay Weakland, 18-years-old from Carlisle, PA was pronounced dead
at the scene. Timothy Ogden, 34-years-old from Clayton, NJ who was a passenger in the 2014 Honda Civic, was transported to the Atlantic City Medical Center but later died as a
result of his injuries.
Gerald White was in Wildwood participating in an unsanctioned, illegal car rally that resulted in multiple motor vehicle accidents, traffic citations, criminal charges, and injuries to
innocent victims, including the two deaths and injuries that resulted in Mr. White’s conviction and sentence. Prosecutor Sutherland stated; “The tragic deaths of Lindsay Weakland and Timothy Ogden are heart breaking losses for their friends, loved ones and family that can never be overcome.
I am proud of the work done by the Detectives , Assistant Prosecutors and the Victim-Witness Unit in my office and the members of the Wildwood Police Department that made sure justice was done for their families. Anyone considering engaging in an illegal, unsanctioned car rally should be forewarned that it will not be tolerated by law enforcement,
and we will use the full force of the law to make certain justice is served.”
